Why the brain reaches for ghosts

Pattern recognition is one of the brain's most useful survival tools — and one of its most easily fooled. Pareidolia (seeing faces or figures in random visual noise) and apophenia (perceiving meaningful connections between unrelated events) are well-documented cognitive tendencies. A creaking house at night, infrasound below conscious hearing, or simple sleep paralysis (a well-studied phenomenon where the brain wakes before the body's muscle paralysis lifts, often producing vivid hallucinations of a "presence" in the room) can produce experiences that feel unmistakably real without requiring anything supernatural to explain them.

UFOs and UAPs: what's actually confirmed

The U.S. government's own Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) reporting program, run through the Department of Defense, has published multiple reports since 2021 acknowledging that a small percentage of reported sightings — collected mostly from military sensors — remain genuinely unresolved after analysis. Crucially, "unresolved" or "unidentified" is not the same claim as "extraterrestrial": the same reports attribute the overwhelming majority of sightings to conventional causes (drones, balloons, sensor artifacts, aircraft) once properly investigated, and note that sensor limitations, not exotic technology, explain most of what remains unexplained.

Cryptids: folklore meets fieldwork

Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and similar cryptids sit at the intersection of local folklore, tourism economics, and occasional genuine misidentification of known animals. Decades of organized searches — including sonar surveys of Loch Ness and DNA sampling of "Bigfoot" hair samples submitted to labs — have not produced verifiable physical evidence, though they have reliably produced media coverage, which is itself part of why these stories persist economically as well as culturally.

Psychic claims and the file-drawer problem

Formal scientific tests of psychic ability, telepathy, and precognition — including large, well-funded efforts like the U.S. government's Stargate Project, declassified in the 1990s — have not produced results that hold up under tightened controls or replicate reliably across independent labs. A recurring pattern in parapsychology research is the "decline effect," where an initially promising result weakens or disappears as study design improves, which is often more consistent with statistical noise and selective reporting than a genuine effect.

Why a healthy dose of skepticism helps

Skepticism, properly applied, isn't the same as automatic dismissal — it's a commitment to proportioning belief to evidence and staying open to being wrong in either direction. Investigators like those behind the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry have shown that most "unexplained" cases resolve once someone applies the same rigor a scientist would to any other claim: checking measurement error, ruling out mundane explanations, and being honest about what remains after the mundane explanations are exhausted.

Near-death experiences: the neuroscience view

People who have come close to death — during cardiac arrest, for instance — sometimes report strikingly similar experiences: a sense of leaving the body, moving through a tunnel toward light, and profound calm. Researcher Dr. Sam Parnia's AWARE studies at NYU examined resuscitated cardiac arrest patients directly, and while they documented that some awareness may persist briefly longer than previously assumed during resuscitation, they did not find evidence supporting an out-of-body consciousness independent of brain function. Neuroscientists point to candidate mechanisms including oxygen deprivation, surges of the neurotransmitter serotonin and other compounds in a dying brain, and REM-sleep intrusion into waking consciousness — mechanisms that can plausibly account for the tunnel, light, and life-review reports that recur across cultures without requiring anything beyond known physiology.

Poltergeist reports and infrasound

In the 1980s, engineer Vic Tandy was working late in a lab in Coventry, England, that staff described as having an unsettling, "haunted" atmosphere, when he traced the feeling to a nearby extractor fan producing a 19-hertz standing wave — a frequency below conscious human hearing but close to the resonant frequency of the human eyeball, which can cause blurred vision and a vague sense of an unseen presence. Tandy published his findings as "Ghosts in the Machine" in 1998, and infrasound has since become a leading physical explanation researchers investigate for some reports of unexplained dread, chills, or a felt "presence" in older or industrial buildings, alongside factors like drafts, mold-related toxins, and carbon monoxide exposure.

Astrology and the Barnum effect

In 1948, psychologist Bertram Forer gave students a personality assessment and told them it was individually tailored to their test results; in reality, every student received the same generic paragraph, assembled from statements vague enough to feel personally accurate to almost anyone. Students rated its accuracy highly — a bias now called the Barnum (or Forer) effect, and a core reason horoscopes and personality readings can feel uncannily precise. When astrology's specific predictive claims have been tested directly, they have not held up: a 1985 double-blind study by physicist Shawn Carlson, published in Nature, found that professional astrologers could not match birth charts to personality profiles at a rate better than chance.

Investigated "haunted" locations

Some of the most famous reportedly haunted sites have well-documented, mundane backstories once investigated closely. Borley Rectory in England, dubbed "the most haunted house in Britain" after investigator Harry Price's 1930s research, was later found by subsequent investigators to rest heavily on Price's own exaggerations and some outright fabricated evidence. The 1975 "Amityville Horror" haunting, one of the most commercially successful haunting stories ever told, was substantially discredited after the homeowners' own lawyer, William Weber, stated publicly that he and the Lutz family had constructed the story "over many bottles of wine." Not every investigated site turns out to be a hoax, however — many, like San Jose's Winchester Mystery House, are better explained by a specific, documented history of grief, architectural eccentricity, or superstition than by any need for a supernatural cause.

Alien abduction claims and sleep paralysis

Harvard psychologist Susan Clancy's research on people reporting alien abduction memories, published in her 2005 book "Abducted," found a striking overlap with episodes of sleep paralysis — the same phenomenon described elsewhere on this page, in which a waking mind experiences vivid, often frightening hallucinations while the body remains temporarily unable to move. Clancy's work also highlighted how hypnotic regression, once widely used by investigators to "recover" abduction memories, is now understood by memory researchers to often generate confabulated, false memories rather than uncover suppressed real ones, since a hypnotized subject is highly suggestible to the leading questions of whoever is guiding the session.

Ouija boards and the ideomotor effect

The sense that a Ouija planchette moves "on its own" has a well-documented physiological explanation: the ideomotor effect, first formally described by physiologist William Carpenter in 1852, in which a person's muscles produce small, involuntary movements based on expectation or suggestion, without any conscious awareness of moving at all. Michael Faraday demonstrated the same underlying mechanism a year later in 1853, using a simple apparatus to show that participants in "table-turning" séances were unconsciously pushing the table themselves. Because each participant's unconscious micro-movements average out with others' at the planchette, the result can feel unmistakably external and intentional even though no outside force is involved.
