The Psychology of Belief: Why Smart People Believe Strange Things

Intelligence and education don't reliably protect against believing something false — and in some ways, they can make a person better at defending a belief once formed.

Psychologist Daniel Kahneman's research on cognitive biases points to a counterintuitive finding replicated across many studies: higher cognitive ability doesn't consistently predict more accurate beliefs about contested topics — instead, it often predicts a person's skill at generating sophisticated-sounding justifications for whatever they already believe. Intelligence is a tool that can be pointed at finding the truth or at defending a pre-existing conclusion, and it doesn't come with a built-in preference for which job it does.

The backfire effect (and its limits)

Early research suggested that directly correcting a false belief with evidence could sometimes make people cling to it harder — the "backfire effect." More recent, larger studies have found genuine backfire effects are less common than first believed, but the underlying dynamic is real in a milder form: people evaluate evidence far more skeptically when it threatens a belief tied to their identity or social group than when it doesn't.

Pattern recognition, un-tuned

Humans evolved to spot patterns because false positives (seeing a predator that isn't there) were historically much cheaper than false negatives (missing a predator that is). That bias toward seeing patterns — even in genuine randomness — doesn't disappear with education; it just gets redirected toward more sophisticated-looking patterns, which is part of why conspiracy theories and paranormal explanations often feel like they have compelling internal logic once you're inside them.

Belief as social glue, not just a factual claim

Many strongly held beliefs — paranormal, political, or otherwise — function partly as markers of group identity and belonging, not purely as claims about facts. That's part of why presenting better evidence alone often doesn't change minds: rejecting the belief can feel like rejecting the community around it, which is a much higher personal cost than being factually wrong about something.

What actually helps

Research on belief change points less toward "better arguments" and more toward approach: asking someone to explain the mechanistic details of how they think something works (rather than just why they believe it) reliably exposes gaps even to the believer themselves — a technique researchers call the "illusion of explanatory depth." Curiosity and questions tend to open more doors than confrontation does.
