A genuinely 50/50 hybrid power unit
Previous-generation F1 power units already used hybrid systems, but combustion still did the majority of the work. From 2026, roughly half the car's power comes from electrical energy and half from the internal combustion engine — a dramatic rebalancing that required rebuilding the power unit from the ground up. Cars also switch to Advanced Sustainable Fuels, part of a deliberate push to keep F1's engine technology relevant to road-car development. The shift was significant enough to draw new manufacturers into the sport, including a returning Honda and new entrants building power units with established teams.
Recharge and Boost replace the old energy-deployment rules
Drivers now manage a genuinely finite electrical energy budget through two systems: "Recharge," which automatically tops up the battery under braking and light-throttle moments, and a driver-triggered "Boost Button" that deploys stored energy in a chosen configuration — for an attacking move or a defensive stand. Energy management becomes a much more active, moment-to-moment decision for drivers than in previous eras.
DRS is gone — Overtake Mode and active aero take its place
The Drag Reduction System, a fixture of F1 racing for over a decade, is retired in 2026. In its place: "Overtake Mode," which gives a car within one second of a rival extra electrical power and charging capacity for the following lap, and full-time active aerodynamics — wing flaps that open automatically for low drag on straights and close for downforce through corners, on every car, all the time, rather than only for a following car in a designated zone.
Smaller, lighter cars
The cars themselves shrink: wheelbase down 200mm to 3.4 meters, floor width trimmed 100mm to 1.9 meters, narrower tires, and minimum weight dropping from 800kg to 768kg. After several regulation eras that made F1 cars progressively larger and heavier, 2026 is a deliberate reversal aimed at more agile, closer racing.
Why it's happening all at once
Power unit, chassis, and aerodynamic regulations don't usually change together — teams and manufacturers need years of lead time, and staggering changes limits the risk of getting everything wrong simultaneously. 2026's all-at-once overhaul reflects a deliberate bet: reshape the sport's technical identity around sustainability and closer racing in one coordinated step, rather than incrementally.
